New Year’s Knitalong 2015

Would you believe, with all of the knitting I’ve done over the years, I still haven’t knit an Icelandic-style sweater?  Many of you knit one long ago and have been wanting to knit another.  Some of you are like me and haven’t quite knit one yet.  Let’s do it together!

Pattern Details: Aran weight yarn in amounts as required for your size and your contrasting color choices; circular and double pointed needles in size required to achieve a gauge of 18 sts = 4” in stockinette stitch in the round; a printed copy of Afmæli, 20th anniversary pattern from Istex, available for free here.

For this KAL, we are happy to be offering a 10% discount on your KAL materials purchase, including special orders.  Let us know what you need by Tuesday, January 6th and we’ll get it for you in time to cast on!  For web orders, use coupon code: NYKAL2015

I’ve been looking at Plymouth Yarn Homestead for this one – with its aran weight but soft hand it will make a wonderful New England version of this pattern.  For a machine wash blend, check out Berroco Vintage Chunky.  There are many interesting color combinations, from just two main colors with a third small contrast, to a full rainbow yoke.  Choose your own adventure!  (I’ll be posting some fun combinations in my first blog post coming up soon, and you can see I need to restock these yarns, so let me know what you’d like!)

This style sweater is knit in the round from the bottom up.  The body is knit to the underarms and put on hold while you finish the sleeves.  Once the sleeves are complete, all of the pieces are arranged onto one circular needle and the top is worked in one piece.  You will get a taste of some colorwork knitting at the hems, but the bulk of the colorwork will be done in the round at the top, with some decreasing to shape the yoke.

As with our other knitalongs, I will be posting guidance and tutorials on the blog as we go.  I’ll try my best to stay a step ahead of you in case you encounter something that is new to you.  We will also meet in person – if you’re local to us, join us every other Sunday, from 10-12am!  You can stop by any time we’re open for help or send me an email at sageyarn@gmail.com.
