Rows upon rows of sweet flowers in spring shades make Floreal such a breath of fresh air after our long winter! Keep it simple with just one or two “flower” shades, or go crazy with an explosion of colorful blooms — my version plays with lots of color, but keeps the palette toned down and sophisticated with a neutral sandy shade throughout. Hop over to ravelry for some colorful inspiration from other crocheters!
This sweet pattern is written for children in three different lengths, from tank to tunic to full-length dress, in sizes newborn through 24 months. Designer Deanne Ramsay offers additional sizing in other patterns through her ravelry pattern store, from miniature doll size through girls size 10. There’s also a free pattern for a hat using the same flower stitch, perfect for practicing the technique or trying out your colors!
Don’t be intimidated by the complex appearance of the flowers in the skirt. They’re only two rows, and rely heavily upon double crochet and chain stitches — you can do that! The bodice of the dress is worked flat in single crochet with simple shaping, and Ramsay’s directions are nice and clear. She offers stitch counts throughout, and indicates when to cut your yarn or leave it attached to make assembly easier. Love it! Bright colors and bold fonts will guide you through the pattern, and a photo tutorial for the flower stitch makes this project a breeze. Promise! In Ramsay’s own words, “I fully embrace the idea of minimum effort for maximum effect so I try to incorporate that philosophy into my patterns.” She means it!
