photo (43)On January 28th Sage Yarn is going to be starting it’s very first Mystery Knitalong!  Jane has organized and is running this exciting and social knitting exercise that will result in a fun finished scarf.  I thought I would address a few of the questions that have popped up over the last few days, since we announced it in our newsletter.  If you want a good overview of what I’m talking about, check out our Mystery Knitalong page by clicking here.

Q: What is a Mystery Knitalong?
A: A mystery knitalong is a project that you make along with a group of people, as in a traditional knitalong, but the finished object is a secret!  Some MKALs are centered around a theme and give details about the pattern.  Ours is a scarf pattern that features changing designs throughout so that you are always doing something new.

Q: How do I know I can do this?
A:  This is an advanced beginner/early intermediate pattern.  You should know how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off.  It helps if you are familiar with decreasing, slipping stitches and knitting stripes but you don’t have to be an expert in those techniques.  This is a great opportunity to practice new skills.  And if you run into anything you don’t know, we’ll be here to point you in the right direction!

Q: What pattern are you using?
A: That’s the secret!  We can tell you that it is a tested pattern by a great independent designer and has been run as a mystery knitalong in the past at other shops.  You won’t discover any surprise pattern-editing issues here!  You will be emailed or you will pick up your pattern section each week and in the end you will receive a professionally printed, full-color hard copy of the full pattern.

Q: What if I get stuck?
A: We will help you!  You can visit the shop and one of us (Jane, Carol or Jen) will help you in person, or you can send us an email at sageyarn@gmail.com.

Q: Can I participate from a distance?
A: Of course!  Sign up via our knitalong page and we’ll take care of you via email!  We’ll deliver your final hard copy pattern via USPS.

Q: Colors!  I’m having a hard time choosing colors – what should I do?
A: We can help you!  Sometimes it helps to choose just one color that you like and build the rest of your colors around it (that’s what my mom does).  Another popular technique is to find a great photo via a website such as design-seeds.com and build something around that.  Finally, if you’d like to throw caution to the wind, just throw a bunch of colors into a bag/basket/container, close your eyes and reach in!

Here are a few combos we’ve seen over the past few days for inspiration:
